# Legality

Legality is a web application at https://app.legality.art. The front page is
https://legality.art. It is by invitation: there is no self-service sign-up.
Early access is free; when charging begins it is expected to be around €9 a
month, with a free level that keeps works, their dates and their proof.

## Who it is for

Artists of any kind: illustrators, pattern and surface designers,
photographers, painters, ceramicists, animators, textile and print designers.
Also the brands who licence from them.

## What an author does here, in order

1. Stores work. Every piece gets a certificate of authorship. An author can
   stop there; that alone is the product for many people.
2. Publishes here first, so the date of first publication is set before the
   work goes anywhere else.
3. Groups work into collections.
4. Shows a collection to a brand, through a private link.
5. Proves authorship, if it comes to that.
6. Licences it: invoices and contracts sit where the work sits.

One work is enough to start.

## What it does

- Portfolio: private by default. A brand sees work only through a link the
  artist made for them. Links are per audience and revocable; every opening
  and download is recorded for the artist.
- Proof of authorship: every uploaded file is fingerprinted and time-stamped
  by an independent service the moment it arrives. The stamp shows the file
  existed no later than that day, and can be checked without Legality.
- Certificates: a public record page for a work, carrying its dates, its
  fingerprint and its seal, as a link that can be sent to a brand or a lawyer.
- Publication: one button gives a work a public page dated today, and a copy
  is kept in an independent web archive, so a first appearance can be pointed
  to later.
- Licensing: requests become deals. Terms, invoices, royalty schedules and
  payments in one ledger that warns before a date passes.
- Registrations: US Copyright Office registration numbers and dates are kept
  alongside the works they cover. Legality does not file for the author; the
  author files, and the record lives here.
- Your own assistant: an artist can connect Claude, ChatGPT or another
  assistant and ask about their works, clients and money, or record a payment.
  It reads and adds; it can never delete, never touches seals or certificates,
  and each connection sees exactly one artist's studio.

## What it does not do

- It does not search the internet for infringements.
- It does not file copyright registrations on an author's behalf.
- It does not take a commission on licences.
- It does not email an artist's clients by itself.
